“Edinburgh is an experience
A city of enormous gifts
Whose streets sing of history
Whose cobbles tell tales.”
(Alan Bold)

As one of three host cities on offer for our UCEAP Scotland programs, Edinburgh allows students the experience of living in a capital city full of history, culture and metropolitan excitement that also plays home to some of the UK’s most beautiful architecture and landscape–not to mention the gorgeous Edinburgh Castle as a constant backdrop! For the second year in a row, the city of Edinburgh was named the best city in the UK 2014 by the Telegraph and after spending a bit of time roaming around this majestic city, it’s absolutely no surprise why!

Fun Fact: Famous author JK Rowling wrote all of her Harry Potter novels while living in Scotland and still resides in Edinburgh. In fact, a quick walk off of the famous Royal Mile and visitors can grab a coffee or cake at the exact cafe where the author spent much of her time while writing the series.

The city of Edinburgh is a beautiful mixture of cobbled streets that bring to life historic tales every day, metropolitan shopping and fine dining that make up the city’s New Town and the beautiful gardens and surrounding landscape that offer plenty of outdoor activities year-round.

Being one of the oldest universities in the English-speaking world, the University of Edinburgh is rooted in a long history of academic excellence and innovation and is situated right in the heart of the city. With many of its buildings located throughout the city’s center, University of Edinburgh students can enjoy a quick walk along the gardens or meet-up in one of the many cafes around the Old Town between classes and studying. Bonus: given that the city has a handful of universities that call it home, many local restaurants and shops offer great student discounts!

“This is a city of shifting light, of changing skies, of sudden vistas. A city so beautiful it breaks the heart again and again.” -Alexander McCall Smith

In addition, with fantastic bus and train systems, getting around town or embarking on a day-trip adventure to a nearby city is very easy for students studying in Edinburgh! The airport is also just a quick 20 minute bus or tram ride away for those who are looking to explore other parts of Europe whilst abroad.

There is much to be discovered in Scotland’s capital and it’s no doubt living in Edinburgh is sure to be the UCEAP adventure of a lifetime!
