“One of the most rewarding experiences I had while studying abroad in the UK was the Alumni Mentorship Programme set up by the UC Study Centre in London. Through my matchup with Sarah, an epidemiologist who currently works for GlaxoSmithKline, I gained a whole new insight into the field of biology and potential career choices I could make for myself in the future. Not only that, she also helped me understand a little more about how graduate school works and encouraged me to look at it as an opportunity to get to know more about biology and myself. We bonded over dinner and talked about life (in the biological and everyday sense), adjusting lifestyles to a new culture and a new country, and many other things. I’m so glad to have had this mentorship—and while I know that my time in the UK was limited and could only meet with Sarah only a few times, I’ve learned more about myself than I probably would have had I stayed in California.”
