UCEAP 50th Anniversary Events in London

Posted by

UCEAP recently celebrated 50 years of UC academic exchange in the UK! UCEAP alumni, staff, Partner Liaisons, current students and friends and family joined us in a multitude of events in both Edinburgh and London.  Here’s what we did in London to commemorate the last half-century of successful collaboration between the UC system and its UK Partner Universities:

Thursday, the 15th of October: Exclusive Visit to Sotheby’s Auction House and Afternoon Tea at the British Museum

at sotheby's croppedThe 50th Anniversary came to London on Thursday, first with a private tour of Sotheby’s Auction House. Guests viewed valuable works of art that would be put up for auction that evening, including pieces by Warhol, Picasso, Raphael and many other renowned artists. Afterwards, art dealer and collector Angus Haldane gave a fascinating talk about the art market, its history and his predictions for its future.

teaLater that day, UCEAP alumni and staff met with current UCEAP English University students for afternoon tea at the British Museum. Attendees enjoyed sandwiches, scones, sweets and as much tea as they could drink while engaging in interesting conversation about their study abroad experiences.

Friday, the 16th of October: Lecture at ACCENT by Alastair Owens

DSC_0083On Friday, the long-standing partnership between ACCENT and UCEAP was celebrated with a captivating lecture given by Alastair Owens, Professor of Historical Geography at Queen Mary University of London and a faculty member of the UC London Study Centre Programme at ACCENT.  Professor Owens taught guests about Dr. Thomas Barnardo and the work he did with poor children in London’s East End in the late nineteenth century.

Saturday, the 17th of October: Gala Dinner at Gibson Hall

By Greg Allen

The 50th Anniversary events concluded with a large gala dinner at Gibson Hall in London. UCEAP alumni, staff, current students, Host University Partner Liaisons and other guests mingled at a drinks reception before entering the great hall for a buffet dinner of gnocchi, beef bourguignon and chocolate mousse.  After dinner thought-provoking speeches were given by Professor Susan Carlson, Vice Provost for Academic Personnel and Programmes at the UC Office of the President, Tina Takegi, an officer in the economic section at the U.S. Embassy in London and an alumna of UC Berkeley, Trisha Rassatt, the president of the UC Alumni UK Board and a UC San Diego alumna, and Sophia Crisafulli, a current UCEAP student studying at King’s College London from UC Santa Barbara. Afterwards, guests took part in a fun and challenging pub quiz, testing their knowledge about England and California.

Study abroad programs like UC EAP give people the opportunity to learn about Britain, to see the country and its people up close, and to understand what makes them tick.  And study abroad programs also allow us to bring a little of the U.S. to the UK. -Tina Takagi

These events were a fantastic way for all those either currently or previously involved with UCEAP to celebrate the UC system’s long standing relationship with the UK and its Partner Institutions. UCEAP alumni enjoyed reminiscing about their time abroad and current UCEAP UK University students saw what the future might hold for study abroad students.  Here’s to the next 50 years!
