On Saturday, the 14th of November, over 100 UCEAP English University students and UC alumni attended our very special Thanksgiving meal at the Barbican in London!
The day started at 12:30pm in the beautiful Barbican Conservatory, a place normally closed to the public. UCEAP had this amazing venue all to itself, so guests enjoyed tropical mocktails under twinkling fairy lights, while surrounded by exotic plants and fish. At 1:30pm guests entered the Garden Room, another fantastic spot in the Barbican, where Monika Kraska, the London Study Centre Senior Programme Officer, welcomed them with a short speech before the meal was served.
The first course was Atlantic salmon, dill and lobster terrine topped with Marie rose and shrimp mayonnaise, and mulled wine poached pears for the vegetarians. This was followed by a traditional Thanksgiving plate of turkey, sweet potato gratin and various vegetables, or wild mushroom crepes. For dessert guests were given a pumpkin and apple tart to complete the Thanksgiving theme.
After dessert the winners of the photo, video and blog Thanksgiving competitions were announced while guests sipped coffee and tea and sampled petite fours made up of rocky road brownies, chocolate truffles and even mince pies!
The Thanksgiving meal was great fun and gave guests the opportunity to mingle with students from our Host Universities all over England, as well as reminisce about California with UC alumni. Although we may be far away from America we can still celebrate its traditions in the UK!
