Melanie Woiwode Memorial Scholarship- Swimming
Joining the University of Manchester swim team has already benefited my aboard experience in many ways and I believe that it will continue to do so for the remainder of my time here. This program has given me friends that are from England; it has allowed me to see what it is like to grow up in the country I am now living in; and has given me a sense of security and belonging, knowing that I fit in here. The team has been incredibly supportive of my being from America and the people on it have become some of my close friends and support network. The team has allowed me to find people with common interests to my own and given me a support network to go along with the one created from the women in my UCEAP program. The team has social events as well as training so I have been able to meet a lot of people and experience many new things through being with them.
Furthermore, being on the team has provided structure to my schedule and motivation to continue exercising while here. I love to compete and exercise with a goal in mind and this team has allowed me to do so. Through regular practices it has allowed me to maintain my health, and through swimming I often feel better mentally as well as physically.
I would suggest this scholarship to those participating on sports teams abroad because it is allowing me to remain on a team that has given me so much, without sacrificing any other abroad experiences. This team has given me friends, structure, and health and I wouldn’t have the same experience without it.
