Edinburgh Study Centre 2015-2016 Highlights

Another semester has just wrapped up, and the Edinburgh Study Centre is proud to say that it has been a great success. Throughout the term, we provided a host of events that our students could participate in as a way to further immerse them in the rich culture of Scotland and make their time here even more memorable.

DSC_0041In February, the Scottish Parliament interns were treated with a trip to London to visit the Scotland Office and the Supreme Court, along with a tour of Westminster. In addition to hearing first-hand how the Scotland Office plays its role in U.K. politics, the interns were given a taster of how meetings are run in the Supreme Court. They were given the details of real cases and asked to discuss and come to a final consensus using logic and reasoning.

March and April gave way to fine Scottish dining, as the Scotland students were treated to culinary events. The first was DSC_0128a Scottish cookery evening, and the second event was a walking food tour. During the cookery evening, students donned aprons and got their hands dirty as they were taught to make cheese scones, hot smoked salmon pate, and Forfar bridies. The tour guide expertly wove the students around Old Town and New Town with five food and drink tasting stops in between, all while relaying the city’s rich history. At the end of each event, the students were given a specialized gift to remember their time by.

Nearing the final weeks of the term in May we hosted a farewell day trip, in which we took the students to Scotland’s west highlands. Stops included Doune Castle, which was used as a filming location for Monty Python and the Holy Grail and the Outlander TV series, and Inveraray Castle, which was featured in the 2012 Downton Abbey Christmas special.

As we prepare for our next batch of students, there is no doubt that another successful term will be achieved through the collaborative efforts of the staff at our office, the support we receive from UCEAP, and the memories that will be made through events like these. Stay tuned! The best is yet to come.
