Spring 2017 Orientations Recap: England

We started 2017 off with a bang as we welcomed our spring study abroad students to England! There were four orientation groups in total, comprised of UCEAP students who will be attending University College London, King’s College London, Queen Mary University of London, University of Bristol, University of Leeds, University of Manchester, University of East Anglia, and University of London Royal Holloway. Each of the four groups began their study abroad with a short, two-day orientation in London, chock full of activities from morning til evening.

First, we began orientation with a series of sessions designed to help give students the best possible preparation for their semester abroad. Students learned about adjusting to life in the UK, what they can expect in regards to academics at their new host  universities, and an overall brief on how to survive studying abroad. We also played some fun ice breakers, complete with British trivia!

Afterwards, we were off to see the sights of London! Two orientation groups had a look through London’s lengthy history with a tour of the Museum of London, while the other two groups braved the freezing temperatures hitting London to venture out and explore the grounds of Kensington Palace. Students survived the Tube during rush hour, and took a stroll around some of London’s most famous monuments before dinner.

Finally, we headed to see a London West End show to close the night out for each orientation group. Between all the groups we saw The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night, The Comedy About a Bank Robbery, and Peter Pan Goes Wrong. While jet lag had some poor students snoozing during intermission, all in all it was a great spring orientation. We’ll be seeing all of you soon, but for now, good luck with your first month at uni everyone!
