Last night I had the pleasure of putting together my second Networking with Alumni Event, and I daresay it was even more successful than my first! The promise of guacamole filled burritos always entices students to come out, but I’m happy to report that we had quite the impressive turnout, with nearly a third of all our students abroad in attendance. There were even a few Reciprocity students in the crowd, who currently attend London universities, but have previously studied abroad at one of the UC campuses.
Our student attendees had the pleasure of hearing from a diverse group of panellists, ranging in age and working in a variety of different industries. Though there certainly seemed to be an abundance of Golden Bears in the crowd, between the panellists and students, all nine UC campuses had at least one representative, which was fantastic to see! Moderator Richard Ho, who sat on the panel last fall, led our panellists through an enlightening and informative discussion about what they look for in recruits, the merits of using social media to find jobs, and the ins and outs of getting adjusted to life in London after being in California. It was great to hear all the panellists’ fun anecdotes about their first jobs, and what they miss most about California! Mexican food was definitely #1 on everyone’s list, so burritos were probably the best menu choice for dinner.
After the panel, we headed into the networking reception portion of the evening, which was graciously sponsored by the UC Trust UK. Panellists and students were able to chat face to face with one another, and it seemed as though everyone was both giving and getting great advice. I for one really appreciate events like these, because I think it’s quite special to get current UC students and alumni together so far away from California, and foster those connections abroad. Thanks to both our students and alumni for making my last Networking with Alumni event such a fun and inspiring one!
