Melanie Woiwode Scholarship Recipient: Samantha Yen – Trampolining

Study abroad has most students flying high, but none as high as Samantha Yen! Samantha has really learned how to take a tumble as part of the trampoline and gymnastics team at UCD. Check out her awesome action shots and video, and read about her experience below!

This semester at University of College Dublin I decided to join the samantha yen4trampoline and gymnastics team. It was important for me in my study abroad semester to try new things, meet new people, and most importantly push myself outside of my comfort zone. Over the course of the last few months the trampoline and gymnastics team has done all this and more. My entire experience has been incredibly challenging but rewarding, and I know that my time at UCD would have been drastically different and probably a lot more boring if it weren’t for this team! We often enjoyed social nights out together and it was a great way to experience Dublin with the Irish! They became a home away from home and always gave me something to look forward to every week.

What made it even more fun was setting personal goals for myself and working towards meeting them. My two biggest goals on trampoline were to land a straight back and a full intermediate routine. In gymnastics, my goals were to learn a layout and whip back. It took me nearly all semester to achieve these goals with a few stumbles such as falling off a trampoline and landing face first into mats, but I was able to completely them all. Just yesterday, at the last trampoline practice of the semester, I completely finished a full intermediate routine on trampoline.

I highly recommend the Woiwode Scholarship to similar future applicants. The Woiwode Scholarship allowed me to participate in my chosen sport worry-free. Though I could have still participated in this activity without the scholarship, I would have had to take away from other equally amazing experiences with my time here, such as other trips or activities with other clubs.
