Melanie Woiwode Scholarship Recipient: Jennifer Eap – Surfing

When you think of surfing destinations, England is not exactly the first place that comes to mind. Our University of East Anglia student, Jennifer, was pleasantly surprised by the opportunity to participate in an activity she loves while meeting new people and traveling in England. I wanted to fully experience my life abroad because this was a once in a lifetime chance. Being able to join a sports club or two would allow me to become a part of the university community life and keep me active during my time here. So I joined the Surf Team in UEA. It was a great experience. We practiced every Friday and on occasional weekends went out to the beach. I know crazy right? SURFING IN ENGLAND?!

I met so many new friends and bonded on an activity I loved doing back home. It allowed me to travel to other places in England and kept me from being homesick.

This Fall term, I was unable to work during school so the Melanie Woiwode Scholarship financially helped me during my time here. I was able to do something I love and meet people that I can call my lifelong friends. Without this grant, I would be unable to participate in one of the longer weekend trips that they provided.

This scholarship allowed me to enjoy my time abroad instead of limiting myself and the activities I was unable to join. This club does not only allow me to be active but also stay in a healthy state of mind. Whenever I am stress or need a break from the course load, I am able to look forward to being in nature. Not only will this scholarship aid me in my financial challenges but it will benefit you in ways unimaginable.
