Allison had the opportunity to continue the sport she has loved since age five while studying abroad at University College London. Read more about the friendships and experiences she made with the University of London Gymnastics Club team, and how they shaped her experience abroad in the U.K.!
During my semester abroad in London, I was very fortunate to join the University of London Gymnastics Club team, a recreational and competitive team open to any student attending a university in London. Having grown up doing competitive gymnastics since the age of five, the chance to continue my gymnastics practice while abroad has allowed to me to bring a little piece of familiarity with me to London.
Apart from being an excellent workout, attending the club practices have also allowed me to meet and befriend other university students from not just UCL, my host university, but from all over London. Another opportunity presented to me with club membership was participation in competitions with other English university gymnastics teams. One of my favourite memories of this team was toward the end of the term when a group of us drove up to Nottingham for a competition. We got to spend the entire weekend getting to know each other better, including freezing in the snow together, all eight of us squeezing into our host’s living room for the night and of course, doing lots of gymnastics.

Receiving the Melanie Woiwode Scholarship not only helped to fund my club membership, but also many practices, since each practice carried an additional fee (to help pay for gym rental and coaches). Receiving the scholarship allowed me to attend practice more often without worrying about the costs adding up.
I am so thankful to have received this scholarship and been able to join this team, they both have shaped my study abroad experience a great amount. I’ve met some incredible people, and made even better memories. I would highly recommend any woman planning on playing a sport to apply for the Melanie Woiwode Scholarship!
