Intern: Scotland Students Visit the US Consulate

Does the list of perks the Intern: Scotland students earn ever end??  Last week, the interns visited the US Consulate to meet with Acting Consul General, Jeff Patmore.  One student, Amy Koo, sent us a recap of the visit; read about her experience below:

During the third week of our internship program, the UCEAP Edinburgh Study Centre organised the opportunity [for UCEAP Intern: Scotland students] to visit the U.S. Consulate to meet Acting Consul General, Jeff Patmore, and learn about the life of a Foreign Service Officer. As a UCSD alumnus and with strong connections to many of the UCs, Jeff encouraged us to consider a career in the foreign service, with funny anecdotes about his time abroad and as a part of the service. In particular, Jeff was very candid about the difficulties of his career path, and how varied an experience each FSO can have.

He was open to all of our questions and answered each with sincerity and thoughtfulness. As a student interested in joining the Foreign Service, I appreciated his willingness to meet and to speak honestly with us. In particular, we discussed bilateral relations between the U.S. and other countries and life as an American abroad.  Since all interns are interested in foreign policy and working abroad, it was enlightening to learn more about potential career paths overseas. We really enjoyed getting to meet our Consular officers and hope to learn more about American diplomacy and international relations! Thank you to the Consulate for offering this opportunity!
